I almost didn’t include these but I said what the hell…
Just installed the Topping Lifts for the Boom. This is the one that gives the Boom upward support.
I got the Gaff Rig Boom in. I also strung the Ensign Halliard to support it. Since I have no Sails on this rig.
I attached the Gaff to the Mizzen Mast using some Brass Beads as Parrels.
I used both Black and Brass Beads just for kicks… I doubt it’s historically accurate but it doesn’t look too bad…
Then I used the lifting blocks for the first stage of connecting to Mast. This is called Throat Halliard.
This portion of the Rigging of the Gaff is called Peak Halliard.
Today I’ve been working on the Boom Jaws for the Spanker Boom.
The one that came with the kit didn’t look as authentic as the real ones so I made some out of some Walnut Stock I had.
I use DAP Weldwood Cement and Super glue to attach it…
I needed to get the Boom and Gaff of the Spanker done so that I’m not forced to do this later on in tight quarters
I used a 4mm Dowel and I used my Lathe to sand it down to 2mm… Plus a 5mm Tip on the end.
That’s where a bunch of Running tackle will be tied.
I’m considering a couple of different configurations… In the end I’m going with the configuration that looks the coolest I guess
Preventer Stays – It is a large strong rope extending from the upper end of each mast and running down towards the deck of the vessel in a midships fore and aft direction. The shrouds serve a similar function but extend on each side of the mast and provide support in the athwartships direction.
Here, I’m making the Loop by Seizing a Loop…
I wish I had somebody to talk “Ship-Talk” with. Preferably an Old Timer who has been doing this awhile and who I can watch work.
Anyway… Lacking that… I do this blogging. I know… It’s not the same thing. But I also follow some really talented Model Makers in the Groups I belong to.
So, I’m looking at these Shrouds and I am beginning to suffer the “Modeler’s Regret”… You know… When you think that you should have done something a certain way???… I guess that’s the nature of it. I’m not going to redo it all. Definitely not. But I’ve seen guys who do it.
A prime example are the Seizing on Shrouds that wrap around the Deadeyes.
I started off like this…
I especially love the one all the way to the left. I wish they were all like that and uniform. Hmmm… 🤔🙄🧐
