Anchor Windlass

Parts for Windlass

I cannot believe that Artesania Latina only provided these pieces for the Windlass.

The middle piece has a Figurehead carved on top of it… So I guess AL assumes that I’m good at carving??? ..

I’ll give it a good try though! ..

🤔🙄😲🎉👍

Here’s the diagram

Glued a piece of Manzonia Dowel in the middle

I put a little piece of Manzonia Dowel in the center to simulate the Rachet gear.

I simulated the hole in the middle with some black ink.

Primed and Painting

I have some Martha Steward Craft Paint. The color is Tartan Red. Looks like I’ll need a few coats.

Cathead

Working on the Catheads
Close up

cathead is a large wooden beam located on either side of the bow of a sailing ship, and angled forward at roughly 45 degrees. The beam is used to support the ship’s anchor when raising it (weighing anchor) or lowering it (letting go), and for carrying the anchor on its stock-end when suspended outside the ship’s side. The cathead is furnished with sheaves at the outer end, and the inner end (which is called the cat’s-tail) fits down on the cat-beam. The shank painter is a short rope or chain by which the shank of an anchor is held fast to a ship’s side when not in use. The process of securing the anchor is called catting and fishing it. The cat stopper also fastens the anchor on. The purpose of the cathead is to provide both a heavy enough beam to support the massive weight of the anchor, and to hold the metal anchor away from the wooden side of the ship to prevent damage when the anchor is being raised from the water. The stockless anchor made the cathead obsolete.

Bowsprit / Jibboom Combo

I was intending to work from the Bow back to the Stern on the Deck, however, in order to accomplish it, I had to make the Bowsprit and Jibboom in order to find the correct alignment for the Deck Equipment.

Dark Walnut

I didn’t like the wood that the kit provided so I am using the Pine Dowels and staining them.

I’m using Dark Walnut because it gives it a weathered look.

I made the Stop out of 2 3x3x10mm Manzonia.

I had to make these Cleats from scratch because the Kit didn’t include the proper size!

Anchor Cheek

I have been looking all over for the proper names for these Timbers you put along the forward Hull of the Ship in order to protect it from the Anchor when it is being secured alongside the ship.

Until I find it, I’ll just call it Anchor Timber ..

The way I made them was to glue the pieces of wood onto an Address Label that I cut into shape.

My kit doesn’t call for it but I like the look of it so decided to put them in.

Ventilator Doors

This is a series of these little “Ventilator Doors”, as it’s described in the instructions…

I used some Copper Tape that I bought a long time ago. It worked out perfectly. I put a dab of CA on it, then used a Scribe to make those simulated Nails.

Once I got the hang of making these Doors, I ran out of Doors to do!!!

Gun Ports

After a lot of debate, I decided to go ahead and make Gun Ports as the ship had in the 18th Century.

Added Hinges
Stbd and Port Bow Gun Ports

So, I found that I can take a Razor and cut the shape out. I go down a couple layers. Then I thin out the Gun Port Doors by using some Alien Tape and putting the Door on the end of a Dowel to thin it down on my Sander.

After that, I glue in the Hinges after hooking them into the top of the Gun Port Door.
