Filler Cheater on #14 Strake from Keel

Filler Cheater

I had to make these Fillers to even up the Gap so now I have exactly 25 mm on most of the Hull, which equals 5 Strakes.

Form bending

This next Strake is still going to be a Filler. I’m just pre-bending and I will shave off the excess so that it will be approximately 4 mm wide until it tapers to the Stern. I am only going to have 4 Strakes going through the narrow Channel and flare out to 5 mm at the Stern Post.

The narrow Channel where 4 Planks will go through

I have just enough room for four 5 mm Planks at the end.

I’m worried because my calculations didn’t come out exactly. I will make it work.

#15 as it butts against Stern Post…

The rest of the Strakes will butt against the base of the Stern Post. 🤔🙄

#15 Strake shape forming

I only went with the After part of the ship on this one because the portion of Strake that lays again the Sternpost has to be exact so I didn’t want to risk making 1 Strake that goes from Bow to Stern.

As I get closer to closing it up, it gets harder to clamp.

Using the Rubberband Clamps

I’m using my Rubberband Clamps more and more to press the Planks flat against the Bulkhead…

I have a feeling that I’m going to need a long Cheater… 🤔🙄

Bamboo Rubberband Clamps

Bamboo Rubberband Clamps

I made up four of these Bamboo Sticks which I tied and Glued these Popsicle Sticks to so that it will have a flat surface to push down on the Planks.

The reason for using Bamboo is because they are really strong and won’t break when you apply the Rubberband Tension… 🤔🙄👍

Hot Iron

I use a Hot Iron after soaking the Planks in 1/4 Cup Ammonia to the rest Boiling Hot Water in my Soaker. I usually soak for a few hours.

I apply it to the soaked wood as I slowly apply pressure to bend it around a corner.

Strake #14 from Sheer Strake

From the top… This one is going to be a bit tricky because I need to go down to 2.25 mm on the Bow and 3.2 mm on the Stern with a long taper.

Hopefully my Rubber Band Clamps will hold! .. 🤔🙄😲

Soaking the Planks in my Soaker

You let it soak like that for a bit, then apply Heat for bending it. I use my little Hot Iron.

It’s getting close to the time when I won’t have enough room for these Clamps and will have to go with Pressure Clamps like Bamboo and Rubber Band… 🙄🤔

Cheater after #12 Strake

I noticed that the gap from the Top down was getting too much so I made a little Cheater with a spare piece of Bent Wood I had.

After this, I’ll calculate the amount of Planks I’m going to need.

It looks more even with the Cheater

Old Shoe Box Ship Cradle

Old Shoe Box

I use an old Shoe Box that I’ve cut a couple of U-Shaped Holes on both ends and some Duct Tape to reinforce it.

I like it because it’s sturdy enough to hold the Ship and also won’t damage the wood while I put the Ship upside down on it. (Like I’m doing here).

Also it’s disposable and doesn’t cost any money like those Foam or Clamp type Holders you see on Micro Mark, etc…

I was worried about this huge gap in the forward part of the Hull so I added a Cheater between #12 & #13.

I flared it out on the end in preparation for transitioning over the last Bulkhead to the Stern Post. The Planks have a radical bend that comes up and over and ends up on the Stern Post.

Calculating the Tapers for the Planks

The used my tape measure which I cut off at 100 cm. I put it against the bulkhead that has the most distance to go. There is around 60 mm left so…

60mm / 5mm = 12 Planks

I measured the distance that needs to be covered at the very tip of the bow against the stem and it’s exactly 27 mm…

27mm / 12 Planks = 2.25mm per Planks

Therefore, around between the bulkhead number one and two I will start tapering from 5 mm to 2.25 mm.

In the stern I will still retain the 5 mm to 3 mm long taper that I do with my Ibex Plane.
