Pre-Bending Planks at Stern

I soaked these 2x5mm Planks for 12 hours in 2 parts Ammonia and 8 parts Water in my Soaker. Now I used both heat and gentle bending of Planks around this steep bend. I have already broken several Planks while trying to perfect this technique. Heat and Gentleness is key. 👍

Just dabbed some Super glue to the rubber to hold it
Pre-bending
Clamping the Clamp

I am able to get the large Clamp to push down on the Plank by clamping it against a Bulkhead… 🙄🤔👍

Pushing down

I don’t like to use the “Plank Bending” tools that break the grain of the Plank. IMO, it doesn‘t look as smooth. 🙄

Beginning to make the Turn

I’m slowly working my way around to the turn of the waist.

What I have so far…
From the Stern

Yeah. .. Notice the sharp bend on the last Bulkhead to the Transom. It’s very steep.

I find that I have to Soak the wood first for the Stern section. So… I’m doing it by eye so I may end up making some Fillers .. 🙄

I’m thinking to myself that maybe I should start planning more??? 🤔🙄😲

Saw Dust

Collected Sawdust Sappelle
Basswood Saw Dust

The reason I collect Sawdust is because I use it in conjunction with White Glue for making Putty to fill in gaps.

Cheaters

I am adding my first Cheater so the upper quadrant Stern Section doesn’t bend so much.

Wedge as Cheater

I made a Wedge that is approximately 13 Cm long from where it’s 5 mm all the way to the end of the wedge which is basically a thin piece to fill in the gap as good as possible.

There is a slight gap which I’ll cover with Putty

Hull Planking Upper Quadrant

#4 Plank
Waiting for Contact Cement to dry. ..
My Pug Hally wanting to help! ..

I really love Dap Weldwood Contact Cement for gluing the bow planks. ..

Creative Vising – You can see that the left side Vise is pushing down on the Plank with gravity, while at the same time Vising across the Stern.

I couldn’t believe that I broke the last connection while I was experimenting around with using the last extended Plank as sort of a Vising device.

Hull Planking #1

I’m down to Planking the Hull portion now.

Beginning Top portion
#2 down no taper

After I finish planking 3 Rows of the Sapelle Wood Planks with no tapering, I will begin the tapered upper section planks that are above the Battens which I haven’t figured out yet.

I just finished Planking the Forecastle Deck. I call these the side jobs while I wait for glue to dry on the other aspects of the build.

Like I mentioned before, I use Dap Contact Cement for the Bow Section. I swear it’s a miracle Glue! Holds really strong!

Then for the rest, I use Titebond Translucent Glue. I love this Glue! Very strong holding once set.

I plank over the Gun Port, then Saw it out.

Treating Basswood with Ammonia

I only realized this. When you soak the Basswood Strips in a Combination of around 1:10 Ratio of Ammonia to Water, this treatment changes the color of the wood to this beautiful patina…

Wood on left before treatment. Wood on right after.
